The Den Haag Museum of Photography is proud to announce an exhibition of large polaroids by the American artist and film director, Julian Schnabel. The show will present a selection of 80 photographs, which form a unique tableau revealing the enigmatic character of the artist opening a view into his private life and working environment - his family and friends, and his paintings and sculptures represented in studios and exhibitions. Included are charismatic portraits of Lou Reed, Placido Domingo, Mickey Rourke, as well as images of Schnabel’s private spaces within the Palazzo Chupi – designed and decorated by the artist - on New York’s lower west side and the interiors and surroundings of his studios in Brooklyn, Montauk, and Manhattan.

The artist has taken these extraordinarily large-format polaroids, both in brilliant color and black-and-white, using a spectacular 20x24-inch vintage camera from the seventies, dolly-mounted and as big as a refrigerator. Some of the photographs have been painted upon.

Schnabel, born in New York City (1951), achieved acclaim with his Plate Paintings in the early eighties and has created an influential body of work over the intervening years, including paintings, sculptures, paperworks and photographs. He has directed films since the mid-nineties: Basquiat (1996); Before Night Falls (2000), The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007), and Miral (2010). His artistic work has been exhibited in the world’s leading museums and is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Guggenheim Museums, New York, Bilbao; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Tate Gallery, London amongst many others.

Das NRW-Forum Düsseldorf zeigt Polaroids des amerikanischen Malers und Filmregisseurs Julian Schnabel. Die Ausstellung präsentiert eine Auswahl von über hundert bisher meist unveröffentlichten Photographien, die den unmittelbaren Blick des Künstlers bannen: auf sich selbst, auf Familie und Freunde, seine Malerei und die Skulpturen in Studios und Ausstellungen - ein einzigartiges Tableau von Bildern über Leben und Arbeit der schillernden Künstlerpersönlichkeit. Da gibt es die charismatischen Portraits von Lou Reed, Placido Domingo, Mickey Rourke oder den The Beastie Boys, faszinierende Selbstportraits, die privaten Räume des von Julian Schnabel selbst entworfenen und ausgestatteten Palazzo Chupi in New York, seine Ateliers in Brooklyn, Montauk oder in Manhattan.

Mit einer spektakulären riesigen Polaroid 20 x 24-inch Kamera auf Rollen aus den Siebzigern macht Julian Schnabel diese Photographien von ungewöhnlich großem Format (50,8 x 60,96cm) in schwarz/weiß und brillanten Farben, manche hat er übermalt.

Schnabel, der berühmt wurde mit seinen plate paintings Anfang der 80er Jahre und der seit Mitte der 90er Jahre auch Filme macht (Basquiat (1996); Before Night Falls (2000); Schmetterling und Taucherglocke (2007): Auszeichnung "Best Director" bei den Golden Globes und beim Filmfestival in Cannes, nominiert für vier Oscars; demnächst erscheint sein neuer Kinofilm Miral mit Willem Dafoe und Freida Pinto), hat in allen bedeutenden Museen der Welt ausgestellt und ist in den hervorragenden öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen repräsentiert.
